Zagreb Airport (IATA: ZAG, ICAO: LDZA), also known as Pleso Airport after the nearby suburban area of Pleso, is the independent international airport of Croatia and also 1 of the Croatian Air Force and Defenses primary scrapper jet plane ground. Located ten kilometre from the central railroad terminal in Zagreb, it assisted 2,192,453 riders in 2008. It is the primary hub for Croatian flag bearer Croatia Airlines. Croatia Airlines has constituted their functioning ground in Zagreb. With 14% one-year rider ontogeny, the enlargement of the airport is due to commence in 2009.

History

The 1st field in Zagreb was built in 1909 near the western town vicinity of Črnomerec. It was used by Slavoljub Eduard Penkala for the planes he projected.

In 1927, Charles Lindbergh do a districting in Borongaj Airfield (east of Zagreb) after his successful cut across of the Atlantic Ocean.

The field set about assisting rider traffic on February 15, 1928.

After World War II, commercial service was travel to a former airbase near the small town of Lučko, southwestward of the town, on April 1, 1947. At its extremum in 1959, Lučko assisted 167,000 riders.

On April 20, 1962, service was again locomoted, this clip to the current place near the suburban area of Pleso in the southeastward. It 1st opened with a 2,500 m long landing track and 1,000 m² depot.

A new 5,000 m² depot was built in 1966, as good as the apron enlargement. In 1974, the landing track was continued to its current 3,250 m, and the depot expanded to its current 12,000 m².

The airport's extremum stage of traffic was in 2008, with about 2.2 million riders. In 2004, the airport set up a CAT-IIIb instrument districting system (ILS). The VIP depot was complete in 2007 and is turn up merely south west of the old depot, which is also going to be renovated.

Expansion and modernisation

A new depot is be after for 2011. The initial programme, do by NACO in 1997, was for 47,000 m² of infinite, capacity for 11 jetways, and capacity of care 3 million riders each year, but the airport dominance make up one's mind to trash this programme in favour of a bigger depot.

A new master programme has been germinated by Scott Associates in 2006 and the new depot is currently anticipated to have twelve jetways and a capacity of 3.3 million riders each year. It shall be about 65,600 m² in area , well-nigh 5 clips the size of it of the current depot.

A competition for the final architectural and urban programming solution took location this august, and the victor (IGH d.d.) was declared at the start of october.

This proposal, projected by IGH d. d. i Neidhardt arhitekti d. o. o. i Kincl d. o. o., Zagreb, Croatia, includes a retail factor with shops, banks, coffee bar and eating house. A new luxury hotel with direct subway system relates to the depot is be after, straight in front end of the new depot. The new depot will lie of glass walls and roof in a wavey fascade.

Construction is anticipated to cost €280 million, and is anticipated to set about in 2009 and finish in 2012. Following pass completion in 2012, the old depot shall be used for low-cost operators.

Air Force functioning will travel to the southward stop of the airport due to the building.

Accompanying the depot shall be a 2nd parallel landing track. The pass completion date is unknown at this level.

By 2011, there will also be a new railway line along the Eastern get around of Velika Gorica, which continues from Zagreb across the Homeland Bridge finished in 2007. These components will make an whole new east gate into the town.
