Varna International Airport (IATA: VAR, ICAO: LBWN) is the airport of Varna, the "marine capital" of Bulgaria.

In 2008, the airport dealt 1,432,703 riders and 15,129 aircraft motilities.

History

The history of the airport dates dorsum to 1916 when 2 depots for the 1st hydro-port in Bulgaria were built in the Peinerdzhik area  (present-day Chaika residential area ). Irregular mail-plane service from Sofia to Varna was maintained between 1919 and 1920 and it was not until 1947 that a lasting air hose between the 2 towns was constituted. What had turned into Tihina Airport was located due west of the present-day Asparukhovo Bridge and was so rather primitive for the claims of a modern town. Thus in 1946 a determination was made and a new airport was build several km due west of the town, near the small town (currently city) of Aksakovo, with local mortals enthusiastically working on the location together with the builders. Future programmes and enlargement

Currently, Varna International Airport is theme to heavy traffic with the turning touristry industry in Bulgaria and is in demand of major investing to modernise, spread out and deal projected rider traffic. In June, 2006 the Bulgarian Government presented Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide a 35 yr long grant on both Varna and Burgas airports in return for investing surpassing €500 million, including a new rider depot by 2008.
