Imam Khomeini International Airport (IATA: IKA, ICAO: OIIE) (Persian: فرودگاه بین‌المللی امام خمینی) is turn up in Tehran, Iran. The airport is turn up approximately 30 klicks (19 mi) southward of the town. It was projected to replace Mehrabad International Airport, which is in the due west of the town, currently inside the town bounds. The airport, originally denominated as Ahmadabad, is currently named after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the Iranian Revolution in 1979. The Airport's Second depot is due to start building in 2028.

History

The building started before the Islamic Revolution of 1979. The original project was ground on Dallas Love Field. The original interior designer were TAMS, a pool of U.S. interior designer. A local joint embark was characteristic and was named TAMS-AFA to execute the full project and oversight of building.

After the Islamic Revolution, the labor was abandoned until the authority of Iran make up one's mind to project and construct the airport using local know-how. The French company ADP was take to caput the local interior designer and applying scientist companies. A turnkey project and construct contract was presented to a local general contractor corporation, Kayson, to action and oversee the building. After 2 yr this contract was abandoned and was presented to a Bonyad, the Mostazafan & Janbazan (M&J Foundation), a public corporate trust.

After building of the independent depot was complete by M&J Foundation, the Iranian Civil Aviation Organization make up one's mind to change state the direction of functioning alongside with the building of the 2nd depot to the TAV (Tepe-Akfen-Vie) pool of 2 Turkish (Tepe and Akfen) and an Austrian (Vie) corporations.

The original opening was scheduled for February 1, 2004, the oncoming of the auspicious 'Ten-Day Dawn' (February 1-11) jubilations, marking the day of remembrance of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

There were numerous issues skirting the building of the airport including the provide of fuel to the new airport, and a hold up in signing a cover with the Iranian oil ministry squeezed a hold up in the opening of the airport until May 8, 2004.

Just prior to the opening on May 8, two local air hose declined to exchange to the new airport. Economic Hayat-e No daily cited Ali Abedzadeh, managing director of semi-privately-owned Iran Aseman Airlines, as state "We are not flying from an airport run by outlanders".

TAV functionaries were say to pull away their force and equipment from the airport on May 7, 2004, and functioning were handed over to Iran Air.

"I believe they (the armed services) were given false accounts that the Turks were still on the location, while they had all evacuated the airport by Friday," airport director Hussein Pirouzi stated.

However, on May 8, a few 60 minutes after the opening of airport, the Revolutionary Guards of the Iranian Armed Forces closed it, adverting security fearfulnesses over the use of aliens in the running of the airport. Only 1 Emirates voyage from Dubai was let to bring down. The 2nd voyage from Dubai, which was an Iran Air voyage, was impelled to bring down in Isfahan International Airport, because the Mehrabad Airport did not let it to bring down there after the Imam Khomeini airport was closed by the armed services. The balance of the voyages were deviate to Mehrabad.

On May 11, in a running across of the Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Ugur Ziyal and Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi, the Turkish evinced edginess approximately the activenesses of the Iranian armed services.

The airport reopened on May 13, as deputy sheriff caput of Iran's Joint Chiefs of Staff Brigadier-General Alireza Afshar say "because foreign corporations will no longer be in bear down of the airport's functioning, security obstructions are take."

TAV functionaries, who had held to clear out for 2 hebdomads for the challenge to be settle down, also say that they believed the memo of understanding they signed with the Iranian authority last yr to function the airport's Terminal one is still in consequence.

Further perplexing affairs, on April 29, 2005, the United Kingdom and Canada warned its citizens against using the airport due to say safety comes to concerning the landing track, which has been demanded to have been made over antediluvian qanats (subterranean waterways) . Iranian functionaries countered these demands by saying that there are no safety issues and that the International Civil Aviation Organisation had inspected and okayed the airport.

The Sepah Pasdaran were denoted impermanent operators after Iran Air give up its station in January 2008. However, the Iranian Government directed a quest to IETA for an extension on the Sepah's functioning of the airport until August 2009. The quest is considered to be accepted.

Currently, 85% of respondents have valued the airport's services to riders as poor or mean.
