Sudbury Airport or Greater Sudbury Airport, (IATA: YSB, ICAO: CYSB), is an airport in the Canadian town of Greater Sudbury, Ontario and is turn up 11 NM (20 kilometre; 13 mi) nor'-east of the business district area , on Municipal Road 86 between the communities of Garson and Skead. Although in many context of use the airport uses the name Greater Sudbury Airport, its functionary name, as registered with Transport Canada and published in all aeronautic publications, is still just Sudbury Airport.
The airport is sort out as an airport of entry by NAV CANADA and is staffed by the Canada Border Services Agency. CBSA military officers at this airport now is able to deal civil aviation aircraft only, with no more than 15 riders.
The airport is assisted mainly by regional bearer lines such as Air Canada Jazz and Bearskin Airlines. From 2001 to 2004, it was also assisted by WestJet. It is also a ground of CHC Helicopter air ambulance service.
History
Sudbury Airport set about as an emergency districting installation with a individual 6,600 foot (2,000 m) districting strip for CF-100s from CFB North Bay in 1952.
On February 25, 1953, the Sudbury Airport Committee was characteristic to hall and set up for commercial voyages to Sudbury. A 2nd districting strip and a depot construction had to be made and building of these were finished in 1955. Regular commercial air service set about on February 1, 1954, by Trans-Canada Air Lines.
The air traffic control tower was added in 1972 and the depot construction was replaced with a bigger 1 in 1973, which was restituted and spread out once again in the early 2000s.
From 1972 to 2000, Sudbury Airport was owned by the Federal Government and functioned by the transportation system section of Sudbury. On March 31, 2000, the airport onwership and direction were reassigned to the Sudbury Airport Community Development Corporation (SACDC).
In June 2008, under recommendation from NAV CANADA coming after a year-long aeronautic survey, the control tower was closed primarily due to want of traffic. The airport is currently staffed 24 60 minutes as a voyage service station.
