Sheffield City Airport (IATA: SZD, ICAO: EGSY) was a little airport turn up in Sheffield that is currently closed. It was turn up in the Tinsley Park area  of the town, near the M1 state highway and Sheffield Parkway, and opened in 1997. The airport had its CAA license pulled away on 21 April 2008 and offfically closed on 30 April 2008, as Sheffield City Council had okayed programmes to change state the airport into a business parkland.

History

Before it opened, Sheffield was the biggest town in Europe without its own airport because there is no local area  of flat district big enough for it. In fact the size of the airport which was finally constructed was find out by this geographic factor, see topographic map of the Sheffield area . It is not coincidental that Sheffield is built on hills because the resultant rivers influenced the development of its most famous industry, viz. steel doing.

The airport was built on a short-runway STOLPORT framework similar to London City Airport. It offered voyages to Belfast, Amsterdam, Brussels, Dublin, Jersey and London with the air hose KLM, Sabena, British Airways and Aer Arann. It was this pick of the town airport framework, come up right away before the meteoric come up of the low cost air hose in the UK, that excoriated the airport from the set about: Sheffield arguably did not have enough mercantilism to back up the sort of high-fare short-hop business organisation voyage that is able to use the airport, while aircraft types used by the new low-cost air hose, for which there is much claim in the Sheffield area , is able to not use the airport due to the distance of its landing track. It also endured from the intractable job of not having enough traffic to warrant putting in a radio detection and ranging, while many air hose were declining to function into the airport due to its want of radio detection and ranging.

In the finish the last scheduled air hose get out in 2002, after the airport had go across into the mitts of Peel Airports, who were soon to be opening the nearby Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield airport. By the clip the last scheduled service was winged, the depot inside had been changed over to business office accommodation. Fire and Rescue cover and Air Traffic Control staffing stages were both cut down and print processes for instrument draw close were move back, rendering the airport unattractive to the current contemporaries of air hose which offer low-cost services with turbo-propeller plane aircraft.

There has been a point of contention over whether there was anybody inducement for Peel to further the airport. It was accounted that Peel had been offered the location for 1 lb if they is able to present that the airport was not viable by 2007. The estimated worth of a business parkland, which is currently be after, being £1,000,000.

Current position

A account commissioned by the City Council bring out it was losing £400,000 a yr and was not sustainable. On 21 April 2008, the airport's CAA license was move back. The airport closed altogether on 30 April 2008.

The landing track has been sold and shall be evolved into the Blue Skies Business Park. A heliport at the east finish of the location will remain open for use by the South Yorkshire Police eggbeater and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance eggbeater, both of which are ground at Sheffield, but will not be available for use by other aircraft.

The location

The Airport was made as division of a programme to repossess the district, which had antecedently been mined (coal) and was the location of abandoned ship steel works and squander tips. The opencast coal works were attempted by R J Budge, who then be after to construct the business parkland one time the location was repossessed. The labor was hold up division fashion through when Budge locomoted break. The location was owned in division (all ?) by the council. As division of the strategy the link up route was made, ab initio to take the coal camions straight to the Sheffield Parkway and out to the M1. Following the pass completion of coal extraction and the reinstatement of the district, the link up route was finished through to Tinsley. This let work to start on the business parkland that was division of the strategy and essential to the original programme to repossess the district. The location is between Tinsley Golf Course, the Sheffield Parkway, Tinsley Marshalling Yards and British Steel Tinsley rolling manufactory. Following the break of the original development the location was sold to Peel retentions.
