Chippewa County International Airport (IATA: CIU, ICAO: KCIU) is a U.S. public airport turn up 18 land mile (29 kilometre) southward of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. It is the former Kincheloe Air Force Base. The airport opened a new rider depot in September 2002. The airport is used largely for civil aviation but is assisted by 1 commercial air hose. UNICOM is used as a common traffic advisory oftenness (CTAF) on 123.00mhz, since the original USAF air traffic control tower is remote-controlled and non-operational. Runway 16/34 has a preempted threshold and was originally 12,000 human foot (3,700 m) in length in say to adapt B-52 and KC-135 aircraft when the airport was an operational Strategic Air Command ground. However, 4,800 human foot (1,500 m) of the landing track has not been back up and is no longer suitable for takeoffs or landings.
