Roswell International Air Center (RIAC) (IATA: ROW, ICAO: KROW, FAA LID: ROW), also known as Roswell Industrial Air Center, is a city-owned public-use airport turn up 3 land mile (five kilometre) southward of the central downtown of Roswell, a town in Chaves County, New Mexico, United States.
History
From 1941 to 1967, the installation was known as Roswell Army Airfield during World War II, and Walker Air Force Base during the Cold War. At the clip of its closing, it was the biggest found of the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command. Roswell International Air Center was germinated after the closing of Walker Air Force Base on 30 June 1967.
Walker AFB was named after General Kenneth Newton Walker, a native of Los Cerrillos, New Mexico. In 1966, the Air Force denoted that Walker AFB shall be closed. This was during a round of ground shutting and integrations as the Defense Department fought to pay the disbursements of the Vietnam War within the budgetary boundaries position by Congress.
It is also known for the Roswell UFO incident, an event that purportedly take place on four July 1947. It is say that a "winging saucer" crashed during a severe electrical storm near RIAC at Corona, New Mexico.
The location also was used for several yr to establish stratospheric balloons for Air Force labors.
