History

During its prime, Mercedita used to have Lockheed L-1011 jet plane from Eastern Air Lines and DC-10 jet plane from American Airlines from the United States. It also had extensive domestic service by Prinair each solar day.

The larger air hose and jet plane finally go forth, but Prinair kept on winging there until it lay off functioning in 1984. Eastern Air Lines then returned in 1985, with their little aeroplanes winging under the banner name Eastern Metro Express winging several clips daily from Eastern's San Juan hub. American Airlines come after suit of clothes before long, also winging little aeroplanes under the name of American Eagle one time the San Juan airport got a hub for American, to a fault.

During the 1990s, jet plane returned briefly, with American set about Airbus A300 service from Newark, and Continental Airlines also flying from Newark, on Boeing 757s. Carnival Air Lines functioned the 1st intra-Puerto Rican jet plane service to Mercedita during the 1990s also, winging Boeing 727's, and Airbus A300 from Rafael Hernández Airport in Aguadilla, in addition to service from New York, and Newark, New Jersey. Vieques Air Link has also offered service there.

After Ponce's city manager Rafael Cordero signed a contract to construct a major harbor in the area , Mercedita's managing director make up one's mind to spread out the airport's landing track to 8,000 human foot to adapt expected development in air hose traffic.

On June 17, 2005, JetBlue Airways set about daily, non-stop service between John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and Mercedita Airport. Shortly after this declaration, Continental Airlines also started non-stop service from Newark Liberty International Airport and Ponce. This service ended on January 17, 2008. On June 3, 2006, Delta Connection set about servicing the airport, with twice-weekly, regional jet plane service to Atlanta, Georgia. The service ended on January 20, 2007. JetBlue has also added daily, non-stop service between Ponce and Orlando International Airport.
