The airport's former name was Pochentong International Airport.
On July 6, 1995, the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) signed a grant understanding with the French-Malaysian joint embark corporation Société Concessionaire d’Aéroport (SCA), to function Phnom Penh (PNH) - Pochentong International Airport. In return for a 20-year grant, SCA -- 70 pct owned by Groupe GTM and 30 pct by Muhibbah Masterron of Malaysia -- perpetrated to a $110 million improvement plan that includes the building of a new landing track, depot and shipment constructions, depots, installment of a Cat III stage Instrument Landing System (ILS) and connected draw close visible radiation.
The Berger Group was pick out by the RGC to furnish independent technologist services during the grant, to audited account the project and to counsel on the practicality and cost of the grant’s advised improvements. The Berger squad also managed the initial works to adapt wide-body aircraft such as 747s, including asphalt concrete landing track covers; installment of new ILS, metrological equipment, landing track visible radiation and generator and influence systems; and building of a new firehouse, taxi strip and turn-pad extensions.
Following the successful pass completion of the initial works, the Berger squad furnished project reexamine and independent technologist services for the building of a new 18,000-square-meter depot construction to adapt turning holidaymaker traffic. The $22 million depot construction includes 3 mobile aerobridges, over 700 automobile parking zone and VIP and CIP installations.
The airport also has a Dairy Queen inside. It is 1 of the 1st international franchises that have opened up in Cambodia.
