Tocumen International Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen) (IATA: PTY, ICAO: MPTO) is an international airport turn up 15 land mile (24 kilometre) from Panama City, Panama. In 2006, it underwent a major enlargement and redevelopment plan in say to overhaul and better its installations. It is now the only airport in Panama with 2 landing track for use and is also the biggest airport in the land. Tocumen International is also the busiest airport in the contigious Central America, before Juan Santamaría International Airport, Costa Rica and Comalapa International Airport, El Salvador

History

During World War II the airport was used as a armed forces field by the United States Army Air Forces Sixth Air Force. It was known as Patilla Point Airfield and was division of the defences of the Panama Canal. The 37th Pursuit Group at Albrook Field dotted the P-40 Warhawks of the 28th Pursuit Squadron to the ground from nine Dec 1941 though 26 Mar 1942 in the immediate consequence of the Pearl Harbor assail.

The 1st Tocumen International Airport was kick off on June 1, 1947, by then president Enrique A. Jiménez. The independent disposal and depot construction was kick off seven yr after.
