John F. Kennedy International Airport (IATA: JFK, ICAO: KJFK, FAA LID: JFK) is an international airport turn up in Queens County, New York in southeastern New York City approximately twelve land mile (19 kilometre) from Lower Manhattan. It is the top international air rider gateway to the United States and is also the direct load gateway to the country by rate of despatches. The airport is functioned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the 2 other leading airports in the New York metropolitan area , Newark Liberty and LaGuardia. JFK airport is the base of functioning for JetBlue Airways and is also a leading international gateway hub for Delta Air Lines and American Airlines. Ninety air hose function out of JFK. The airport is named after John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States.

History

Construction

JFK Airport was earlier known as Idlewild Airport (IATA: IDL, ICAO: KIDL, FAA LID: IDL) after the Idlewild Golf Course which it preempted. The airport was originally projected as a stand-in for LaGuardia Airport, which was already present signs of deficient capacity in the late 1930s. Construction set about in 1943; about $60 million was ab initio passed, but only 1,000 acres (400 ha) of district on the location of the Idlewild links course were allowed for use.

The labor was renamed Major General Alexander E. Anderson Airport in 1943 after a Queens inhabitant who had commanded a Federalized National Guard unit in the southern United States and who had buy the farm in late 1942. In March 1948, the New York City Council once again modified the name of the airport to New York International Airport, Anderson Field, but the name "Idlewild" stay in general use until 1963.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey rent the airport belonging from the City of New York in 1947 and back up this rent currently. The 1st commercial voyage at the airport was on July 1, 1948; the opening observance was go to by President Harry Truman. Upon opening Idlewild, the Port Authority scrubbed foreign air hose' allows to use LaGuardia, efficaciously squeezing them to travel to the new airport.

The airport was renamed John F. Kennedy International Airport in 1963, one calendar month after the kill of President John F. Kennedy.

Development

The Port Authority originally projected a individual 55-gate depot for the airport, but the major air hose of the clip did not hold with this programme, reasoning that the depot shall be far to a fault little for time to come traffic. Architect Wallace Harrison then projected a master program under which each major air hose at the airport shall be given its own infinite to evolve its own depot project. This strategy do building more practical, do depots more navigable and presented inducements for air hose to contend with each other for the most good project. The revised master programme run across air hose blessing in 1955.

  • The International Arrivals Building was the 1st new depot task at the airport. It was projected by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and characteristic perpendicular "finger" docks to let a greater figure of aircraft to parkland, a major project invention at the clip.
  • United Airlines opened Terminal 9, a Skidmore project similar to that of the IAB, in October 1959. Eastern Airlines opened its Chester L. Churchill-designed Terminal 1 one calendar month after.
  • American Airlines opened its Terminal eight in 1960. The depot was projected by Kahn and Jacobs and got known for its 317 human foot (97 m) stained glass frontage projected by Robert Sowers, which was the biggest stained glass installment in the  world until 1979. The frontage was take in 2007 as the depot was pulverised to do appartment for the new Terminal eight; American named the prohibitive cost of taking the enormous installment.
  • Pan American World Airways opened the Worldport (currently Terminal three) in 1960. It characteristic a big, elliptical roof suspended by 32 positions of radial stations and cables; the roof continued 114 human foot (35 m) beyond the ground of the depot to cover the rider loading area . It was 1 of the 1st airline depots in the  world to characteristic Jetways that linked to the depot and that is able to be travel to supply an easy walk for riders from the depot to a docked aircraft, instead than having to board the aeroplane outside via airstairs, which go down from an aircraft, via truck-mounted mobile steps, or via wheeled steps.
  • Trans World Airlines opened the TWA Flight Center in 1962. The depot was projected by Eero Saarinen and its distinctive characteristic got a famous mental image of JFK. With the demise of TWA in 2001, the depot got vacant. In 2005, JetBlue Airways and the Port Authority financed the building of a new 26 entrance depot behind the Saarinen construction, branded as Terminal 5, which opened on October 22, 2008. T5 is linked to the Saarinen central construction through the original "tubing" which link up the construction to the outlying entrances; the central construction is being renovated and will reopen at a after date as an entry point to T5.
  • Northwest Airlines , Braniff International and Northeast Airlines opened a joint depot in 1962.
  • National Airlines opened the Sundrome (currently Terminal six) in 1970. The depot was projected by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. In 2001, United Airlines be after to reformulate this depot and the TWA Flight Center as a new United depot, but the air hose after cut down its functioning at JFK and abandoned programmes for a future JFK hub. Terminal six was subsequently used by JetBlue Airways, and is now vacant coming after JetBlue's travel to Terminal 5.

JFK was projected to adapt aircraft no bigger than a Douglas DC-6 and had to be significantly modified in the late 1960s to adapt Boeing 747s.

By the mid-1980s, JFK had catch up with Newark International Airport to get New York City's busiest airport. The supersonic Concorde, functioned by Air France and British Airways, furnished scheduled trans-Atlantic supersonic service to JFK from 1977 until 2003, when Concorde was retired by both bearers. JFK had the most Concorde functioning each year of anybody airport in the  world.

JFK is now undergoing a $10.3 billion overhaul. The airport set about building of the AirTrain JFK mass rapid transit system in 1998; finished in December 2003, the rail web connects each airport depot to New York City metros and regional commuter trains at Howard Beach and Jamaica, Queens. The airport opened a new Terminal one in 1998, and the $1.4 billion replacing for the International Arrivals Building, Terminal 4, opened in 2001. Construction has been finished on JetBlue Airways's new Terminal 5, which integrates the historic landmark TWA FlightCenter depot, while Terminals eight and nine are undergoing renovation as 1 individual Terminal eight for the American Airlines hub. In 2008 the Port Authority Board of Commissioners okayed a $20 million programming survey for the renovation of Terminals two and 3, the hub of Delta Air Lines.

On March 19, 2007, JFK got the 1st airport in the United States to have the Airbus A380 with riders aboard. The route-proving voyage with more than 500 riders was functioned jointly by Lufthansa and Airbus and arrived at Terminal 1. On August 1, 2008, JFK had the 1st regularly-scheduled commercial A380 voyage to the United States, functioned by Emirates on its New York-Dubai path using Terminal 4. This service was suspended indefinitely in 2009, due to poor rider claim.
