Nadi International Airport (IATA: NAN, ICAO: NFFN) is the independent international gateway for the islands of Fiji. It assists approximately 1.2 million mortals per yr, and is the independent hub of Air Pacific.

History

The original landing strip at Nadi were built by New Zealand in 1939. They were paid for by the British colonial dominances and were used by the United States Army Air Forces when the Pacific War set about in 1941, as USAAF Nadi. Early in the conflict, the Americans winged B-17 Flying Fortresses from Nadi against Japanese marks in the Philippines and Solomon Islands. Later in 1943, the 42d Bombardment Group, winged B-25 Mitchells from Nandi.

Following the finish of the conflict, command of Nadi Airport was handed over to New Zealand on 20 December 1946, and the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand set about functioning from Nadi in 1947. At independency in 1970, the Fijian authority set about take part in the organization of Nadi Airport, and full command was handed over in 1979.

The 1st macadamise landing track was build in 1946 at a cost of £46,500; length 7000ft x 150ft - 2133m x 46m.

Then, as currently, Fiji was the crossing of the Pacific - and in those solar days was even more eminent as a refuelling halt. Back then, the apron was shade off by thenars and crotons and hibiscus trees, with whitewashed rock ways linking it to the depot. These have currently been lost under concrete as the apron has spread out over the yr, as planes bigger in both figure and size district at Nadi. In those solar days (1940s, 1950s), the airport's functionary name was Colony of Fiji: Nadi Airport; although foreign timetables elongated to enchantment the name falsely as Nandi.

Nadi was take as the leading airport for Fiji primarily due to its place on the drier west seashore of Viti Levu.

It is turn up in Viti Levu.

During the 1st one-half of the 1960s, Nadi assisted as a key airport for transport of riders from Auckland's Whenuapai airport which is able to only take turbo-propeller plane and plunger planes, onto the new DC-8s and Boeing 707s bond for North America and Europe. At 1 clip, New Zealand commanded the  world's biggest Flight Information Service (FIS), which at its biggest continued to 10,360,000 foursquare klicks. All of this was commanded from Nadi.

Operations

Arrivals and going are much preferred to be to the southward, due to the close propinquity of the Sabeto Range to the immediate northward of the airport. A big swing about area , suitable for Boeing 747s, is turn up to the go away of the threshold of Runway 02, in example meteorologic factors do going to the northward necessary.

In 2008, a Qantas Airbus A380 had to do an emergency districting to set down a ill rider, demonstrating that whilst not demonstrated, the installations at Nadi are sufficient to provide for the biggest civilian plane in the  world.

Today, the biggest concentration of hotels in Fiji has grow up in and around Nadi, and as touristry start in the 1960s, the nearby fall back under building in the nearby Mamanuca Islands cemented Nadi as the center of Fiji's touristry industry.

Nadi is also the operational ground for Air Pacific, which services six airports throughout the south west Pacific, and many more on the Pacific Rim. Remnants of the biggest FIS in the  world stay as, for instance, Nadi Tower supplies an FIS service for Fua'amotu Airport in Tonga when Fua'amotu Tower is off watch.
