Montgomery Regional Airport (IATA: MGM, ICAO: KMGM, FAA LID: MGM), also known as Dannelly Field, is a joint civil-military public airport turn up 6 land mile (9.7 kilometre) southwestward of the central downtown of Montgomery, a town in Montgomery County and the capital of the U.S. province of Alabama. It is largely used for armed forces and civil aviation, but is also assisted by 3 commercial air hose.

History

From the commencement, commercial air power and army aviation have been laced in Montgomery. The 1st commercial air services in Montgomery functioned at Maxwell Field, a armed forces installation constituted by the Wright Brothers due west of the town. To supply for the separate demands of commercial air power, the City of Montgomery opened its original municipal airport in 1929 east of the town. This installation was subsequently named Gunter Field and was assisted by a predecessor of American Airlines. Eastern Air Lines later took over service at Gunter.

In 1940 the War Department pick out Gunter for a new airplane pilot grooming installation. Gunter rapidly got back up, Eastern Airlines was pressured to travel temporarily to Maxwell, and the town bought a parcel of land southwestward of business district on US 80 to replace Gunter for civilian air power. Separately, the Army Air Force placed a take for 7 auxiliary fields in the neck of the woods of Gunter and the town and USAAF held that the town's new bought location would also assist as Gunter's aide field #6. It opened in 1943 and was named for ENS Clarence Moore Dannelly, Jr., USN, a Navy airplane pilot assassination in a 1940 grooming accident and see to be the 1st casualty of World War II from Montgomery. The old Army Air Force depots are currently division of the Montgomery Aviation complex. The original 3 landing track, and their original dimensions, were:

  • 3/21: 4,000 x 150 foot (46 m) Still is currently.
  • 9/27: 3,500 x 150 foot (46 m) Extended to 7,000 foot (2,100 m) in 1955. Extended to 9,000 foot (2,700 m) in 1963. Redesignated 10/28 in 1992.
  • 15/33: 4,000 x 150 foot (46 m) Closed in 1981. Some parts stay as taxi strip and apron.

When Dannelly Field opened, Eastern locomoted its functioning there. The town took statute title to Dannelly in 1946, although joint commercial and armed forces use elongated, and put up a lasting rider depot and control tower northward of Runway 9/27 in 1955. While Runway 9/27 was being reconstructed in 1963, and once again in 1970, commercial voyages were temporarily deviate to Maxwell.
