General Mitchell International Airport (IATA: MKE, ICAO: KMKE, FAA LID: MKE) is a county-owned public airport turn up 5 land mile (8 kilometre) southward of the central downtown of Milwaukee, a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States.

It is named after United States Army Air Service General Billy Mitchell, who was raised in Milwaukee and is frequently regarded as the male parent of the United States Air Force. The airport is the independent hub of Midwest Airlines, and a focal point town for AirTran Airways. Along with being the primary airport for Milwaukee, Mitchell International has sometimes been draw as Chicago's 3rd airport, as many Chicago travellers use it as an choice to Chicago O'Hare and Chicago Midway. It is also used by traveler throughout Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. An Amtrak train station opened at the airport in 2005. The station is used by the Hiawatha Service line running between Chicago and Milwaukee several clips daily.

History

The original field was constituted in 1920 as Hamilton Airport by business owner Thomas Hamilton. Milwaukee County bought the district on October 19, 1926, for the Milwaukee County Airport. Kohler Aviation Corporation set about furnishing rider service across Lake Michigan on August 31, 1929. A rider depot was afterwards build in 1940, and on March 17, 1941, the airport was renamed General Mitchell Field after Milwaukee's armed forces airpower urge, Brigadier General William "Billy" Mitchell. On January 4, 1945, Mitchell Field was rent to the War Department for use as a World War II prisoner-of-war cantonment. Over 3,000 captives and 250 enlisted adult male stayed at the prison camp. Escaped German captives were frequently surprised to encounter a big German and Polish population merely beyond the fence. The present depot opened in 1955 and was spread out significantly between 1984 and 1990. On June 19, 1986, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors officially renamed Mitchell Field to General Mitchell International Airport.

The airport is still owned and functioned by Milwaukee County; nevertheless, some Milwaukee big businessman are urging the privatisation or rent of General Mitchell International Airport in say (they state) to extinguish Milwaukee County’s budget shortfall.

An observation mountain alongside the northern border of the airport is open to the public, and tower communicating are rerun using a low-power FM sender for visitants to tune in on their auto wireless. A Wisconsin historical marker documenting the airport's history is also turn up there.

Statistics

In 2008 a enter 7,956,968 riders used the airport, a 3.62% increase over 2007 with 7,713,144. The airport is owned and functioned by Milwaukee County. Mitchell's twelve air hose offer some 240 daily going (plus 245 daily reaches). Approximately 90 towns are assisted nonstop or direct from Mitchell International. It is the biggest airport in Wisconsin. The airport depot is open 24 60 minutes a solar day.

Expansion

Mitchell International is considering spreading out the buffer zone on their landing track, after the accident on January 21, 2007, when Northwest Airlines Flight 1726 skidded off the landing track after aborting takeoff. According to the FAA, most airports are say to have a buffer zone no shorter than 1,000 human foot (305 m), although many airports do not run across this demand.

There is also a "Master Plan" thought to significantly increase depot area  by either continuing the being depot (in some examples, to nearly duplicate the size) or set about building of an all separate depot. Nearly all examples will affect major reconstruction on the airport itself, and will have a huge impact on the airport's hereafter traffic.

Accourding to the Fall 2007 Newsletter, the advised Concourses F and G shall be constructed merely beneath the Concourse E root.

General Mitchell International Airport has finished a ten entrance addition to Concourse C in mid July 2007, and new rampside boarding entrances for Midwest Connect in Concourse D.
