Luleå Airport (IATA: LLA, ICAO: ESPA) (Swedish: Luleå flygplats) is turn up approximately ten kilometre southeastward of Luleå, Sweden, near the small town of Kallax. It is the biggest airport in northern Sweden (Norrland), and the fifth biggest in Sweden. The airport had 902,168 riders in 2005, most of whom winged to/from Stockholm.

History

The airport officially opened with civilian planes in September 11, 1944. The 1st civilian aeroplane district three twenty-four hour period earlier. However a armed forces airbase was made here already in yr 1941.

A connexion to Murmansk, Russia was functioned since the early 1990s by the Russian airline Arkhangelsk Airlines. With the path set about from Archangelsk, it was the only link from these towns to Sweden. Their Russian machines were, nevertheless, banned in 2006 because of tighter noise and pollution limitations enforced by the European Union. Nordkalottflyg (Barents AirLink) took over the connexion in May 2006 but stopped it in 2007.

Around the yr 2000 the landing track at Luleå Airport was continued and is currently the longest in Sweden. The intention of the extension was to draw heavy long-distance load voyages, and the airport was be after to assist as a fuel halt for load voyages from such towns as Tokyo and San Francisco. The distance e.g. Tokyo-Paris is shorter if rout out through Luleå, compared to winging over China. So far Russian bureaucratism and fees for trans-Siberian voyages have stymied these programmes, but a lower fee closer to standard rates was accepted by Russian dominances in 2006, which has seen freight traffic easy increasing.
