Liberal Mid-America Regional Airport (IATA: LBL, ICAO: KLBL, FAA LID: LBL), once known as Liberal Municipal Airport, is a city-owned public-use airport turn up 2 land mile (three kilometre) due west of the central downtown of Liberal, a town in Seward County, Kansas, United States. It is largely used for civil aviation, but is also assisted by 1 commercial air hose. Service is subsidised by the Essential Air Service programme.
The airport also hosts the Mid-America Air Museum.
History
During World War II, the installation was known as Liberal Army Airfield and was used as a United States Army Air Forces Second Air Force B-24 Liberator grooming ground from 1943 to 1945. Newly strike multi-engine graduates were transported to Liberal to passage to the Liberator, then directed to first Phase ground to be get together up with a crew for armed combat grooming.
Before April 1944, Liberal was place to a Twin Engine Flying Training Group with 4 squadrons (60, 63, 1029, 1030), the 527th Base Hq & Air Base Sq, 324th Sub Depot, 444th (after 744th) AAF Band, and 396th Aviation Sq.
Afterwards, these units were united into the 2425th AAF Base Unit (Pilot School, Specialized, Four Engine)
Facilities and aircraft
Liberal Mid-America Regional Airport covers an area of 2,005 acres (811 ha) which incorporates 2 concrete paved landing track: 4/22 measure out 5,721 x 150 foot. (1,744 x 46 m) and 17/35 measure out 7,105 x 100 foot. (2,166 x 30 m). It also has several other landing track that are currently inoperative.
For the 12-month time period finish December 31, 2006, the airport had 43,550 aircraft functioning, an mean of 119 per solar day: 90% civil aviation, 7% scheduled commercial, 2% air cab and 1% armed forces.
