RAAF Learmonth, also known as Learmonth Airport (IATA: LEA, ICAO: YPLM), is a joint use Royal Australian Air Force ground and polite airport. It is turn up near the city of Exmouth on the north west seashore of Western Australia.
As an RAAF ground, Learmonth is 1 of the RAAF's 3 'bare ground'. No Air Force units are now found at Learmonth and it is back up by a little caretaker staff during peacetime.
History
RAAF Learmonth was an eminent ground during World War II, when it was code-named "Potshot". The ground is named in honor of Wing Commander Charles C. Learmonth DFC and Bar, who, while guiding No. 14 Squadron, was assassination in a winging accident off Rottnest Island, Western Australia in January 1944. No. 76 Operational Base Unit back up the ground during World War II.
In the mid-1960s, the Federal Government gave its back up to programs by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Val Hancock, to reformulate Learmonth as a 'bare ground', due to its propinquity to Indonesia. The major work was attempted by No. five Airfield Construction Squadron between 1971 and 1973.
On October 7, 2008, Qantas Flight 72 do an emergency districting here.
