Funds were roll up from Gulf Malayalis for its development in the 1990s when the Union Government stated it did not have monetary funds. To raise the monetary funds take for airport development, the Malabar International Airport Development Society was characteristic. Later major developments of installations, such as extension of landing track from 6,000 foot (1,800 m) to 9,000 foot (2,700 m) to alleviate functioning of widebody aircraft were action with loans from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO). A user fee was also presented to get the loans.

Since then, installations at the airport have been greatly increased by the Airports Authority of India. There has also been a steady increase in the volume of rider traffic from the airport.

Recent redevelopment, upgrades and enlargement

Due to the recent billion-rupee upgrade of being installations, the base at Kozhikode International Airport has had foreign air hose.

An inline luggage system, the 1st of its form in India that will do off with the separate X-raying of luggage, is being set up. Several air hose have sought nighttime parkland installation at the airport, which has currently ten parkland embayments. Permitting nighttime parkland at the airport will greatly ameliorate air connectivity. Airports Authority of India (AAI) will supply 3 aerobridges (plus options for 2 more) at the airport which will assist riders direct move into the depot while lighting from an aircraft. A 15,000 mtwo (160,000 sq foot) international reaching depot has been opened to riders, similar to the spacious modern international going depot that got operational on May 14, 2007. Three user-friendly conveyor belts are set up at the reaching depot and 800 chromium steel chairs for riders in the security-hold area . Escalators and lifts are also set up inside and outside the depot construction. Lead-in visible lighting system

The draw close to Kozhikode airport landing track is ring with hills and vales. The draw close funnel area  of the landing track 28 is a 30 m (98 foot) to 70 m (230 foot) deep ruffled vale up to a space of 6,000 m (20,000 foot), like a shot coming after the tabletop landing track of 2,860 m (9,400 foot) long. This terrain requires a special type of Approach direction visible lighting system to raise safety for aircraft functioning both during nighttime and poor visibleness statuses. Airports Authority of India have furnished landing track lead-in visible lighting system for the 1st clip in India at Calicut airport as per the recommendations of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, at a cost of Indian Rupees 170 Lakhs.

The lead-in visible lighting system is a positive optical direction to the airplane pilot alongside a specific glide path for ground such as avoiding hazardous terrain, etc. It alleviates the airplane pilot to come after the wanted glide slope. The system is projected in such fashion that 1 group of visible lights is spied from the anteceding group of visible radiation, eventually guiding the aircraft to the propinquity of threshold of the landing track. As per criterion the landing track lead-in visible lighting system, dwell of aggroup of visible radiation positioned on the wanted glide slope at an time interval of not more than 1,600 m (5,200 foot) on the continued glide slope of the landing track. The wanted glide slope is able to be trended or straight line.

The lead-in-lighting system at Calicut airport furnishes wanted glide slope in the continued center line of the landing track and the group of light unit are set up on the top of the 30 m (98 foot) high grille towers at 4 places: 1,820 m (6,000 foot), 3,123 m (10,250 foot), 4,271 m (14,010 foot) and 6,193 m (20,320 foot) from the threshold of landing track 28. Each group of visible radiation dwells of 3 sequential winkling visible radiation in additive contour. The lead-in-light units are influenced through solar influence system at each tower places with battery banks and inverters. The lead-in-light system is be after with wireless command units for distant functioning. The System functions in 3 pre-selected intensity stage at a winkling value of 120 winkles per min to run across the various ambient statuses.

The system has been set into service for nighttime functioning since October 2003. The radio oftenness command for distant functioning of the system from air traffic control tower is also be after.

Supplementing the above lead-in visible lighting system, solar-powered air power obstructer visible lights are also provided at 8 critical brows around the Calicut Airfield.
