Kaohsiung International Airport (traditional Chinese: 高雄國際航空站) (IATA: KHH, ICAO: RCKH), also credited as Siaogang International Airport (traditional Chinese: 小港國際機場) for the Siaogang District where it is turn up, is a medium-sized commercial airport turn up in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. Kaohsiung International Airport is the second-largest airport in Taiwan in terms of rider motion and accounts for around 15% of international rider motions in Taiwan.

History

Originally constructed as a armed forces airport by the Japanese during the Taiwan under Japanese pattern epoch, Kaohsiung Airport retained its armed forces intention when the Republic of China authority merely take control of Taiwan. Due to the take for polite transportation system in southern Taiwan, it was disarmed and changed over into a domestic polite airport in 1965, and further upgraded to international airport in 1969, with regular international voyages set about in 1972.

During 1970s and 1980s, this airport's international voyages were rare, with Hong Kong and Tokyo being the only 2 destinations. Since early 1990s, the committed connexion voyages to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport were kick off and this conveyed southern Taiwan travellers much convenience; they is able to theodolite via the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport where there is a higher accessibility of international voyages. Meantime, direct voyages to South-east Asia towns were also bit by bit opened. This cut down the incommodiousness that travellers in southern Taiwan take to travel to the northern Taoyuan then winged southward. These brought to a steady development in airport rider/voyage moves and a new depot committed to international voyages was opened in 1997.

In summertime 1998, EVA Air opened a direct voyage from Kaohsiung to Los Angeles but it was stopped only 3 calendar month after due to low ridership. Northwest Airlines also assisted this airport, functioning from Kansai Airport (1999~2001) and Narita Airport (2002~2003). These 2 paths were on an individual basis suspended due to the low load factor do by the September 11, 2001 assails and SARS.

After the Taiwan High Speed Rail's startup in January 2007, the Kaohsiung airport endured great losses in rider/voyage motilities; the Taiwan High Speed Rail and record-high costs of jet plane fuel are finish most load factor to Taipei Songshan Airport and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (frequent jitneys relate the Taoyuan Airport and the High Speed Rail Taoyuan Station). Some bearers dropped the 2 paths while other bearers cut down voyages. Carriers currently immobilise their desires on the increasing charter voyages to Japan and Korea as good as the possibility of direct voyages to Mainland China as assured by President Ma Ying-jeou.

Terminals

Interior of the domestic depot going area

Kaohsiung International Airport has 2 depots - domestic and international. They are linked by corridor fashion.

The domestic depot was built in 1965 when the airport was 1st opened as a civilian airport. Through the yr, it has undergone numerous little enlargements and improvements, but jet bridge were ne'er added. For the most division, this is acceptable since the domestic depot principally assists little airplanes that do not claim the use of jet bridge. The current domestic-terminal construction also assisted international voyages before the opening of the new international depot in 1997.

The international depot opened in 1997 and all entrances have jet bridge. It assists all international voyages and connecting voyages to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. Connecting riders continue through in-migration in Kaohsiung and do not take to retell the process in Taoyuan, avoiding over-crowding in Taoyuan and saving much clip between voyages. Like many modern airport depots, the construction has a high ceiling in the check-in area  and its exterior uses glass panels extensively. The floor area  for the international depot is 3 clips more than that of the domestic depot.
