Kandahar International Airport (more usually known as Kandahar Airport) (IATA: KDH, ICAO: OAKN) is turn up 10 land mile (16 kilometres) south east of Kandahar City in Afghanistan. The airport was made by the United States in the 1960s, under the United States Agency for International Development programme. It may have been thought to be used as a possible U.S. army base in example the United States and former USSR went to conflict. It was busy by the Soviets in 1979, and was badly damaged during the Soviet conflict in Afghanistan in the 1980s. It had further damages once again during the US marauds in October 2001, when the Taliban authority was being take.

As of 2007, Kandahar Airport has been reconstructed and is used for both armed forces and civilian voyages. Since 2006 the field has been back up by the Canadians, but there are also other NATO squeezes present. It is sometimes hard to turn up the airport from the sky during day-time because of want of direct contrast with the dry land and the usual dust or haze in the area . But during nighttime clip the landing track is good lit up and is able to easy be spied.

History

Construction

The field itself was made between 1956 and 1962 by American advisors, for a cost of USD 15 million. Bearing a great resemblance to typical U.S. architecture of the clip, its original design was as a refueling halt for long-range plunger engined aircraft locomoting between the Middle East and Southeast Asia. However, with the coming of jet plane, such halts were no longer necessary, and the airport saw small use. Since the airport was projected as a army base, it is more likely that the United States thought to use it as such in example there was a show-down of conflict between the United States and former USSR. While the United States was busy construction Kandahar Airport, the USSR was busy in the northward construction Kabul Airport.

Soviet epoch

During the Soviet line of work of Afghanistan, the field was used intensively by the Soviet Air Forces, both as logistic installation for winging in military personnel and provides and as a ground for establishing airstrikes against local Mujahideen grouping.

Fighting in the Kandahar area  was especially intense. However Kandahar airport was go forth comparatively untouched and its briny construction was mostly intact at the finish of the conflict. The landing strip did endure extensive damage that was afterwards doctored by the United Nations in in the mid 1990s to back up humanitarian voyages.

Taliban epoch

The airport was largely used at this clip for armed forces and improver intentions, hosting regular voyages of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross to and from Kabul, Jalalabad, Herat and Peshawar (Pakistan). Ariana air hose (the Afghan national bearer) also winged infrequent voyages out of Kandahar to Pakistan and a few places in Afghanistan (Herat, Kabul, Jalalabad).

The airport came into the public oculus during the tense dramatic play that was play out when terrorists, who commandeered and district Indian Airlines Flight 814 on the field in December 1999, say the Indian Government to insure the let go and safe-passage of 3 averred terrorists in return for allowing the inhabitants of the rider aeroplane go forth without hurt. Although the exact nature of the cover that was struck between the Indian Government and the pirating group is not known at this point, it did procure the let go of of the three captives who were being held in a prison house in India.

Operation Enduring Freedom

US Marines district at Kandahar in late 2001 and took over command of the airport. It was busy and back up by the Military of the United States since then. As division of Operation Enduring Freedom, the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy also has found a squadron of Harrier GR7A aircraft at Kandahar Airfield to furnish close air back up to alliance army. The Royal Air Force also has found a disengagement of C130 K and J framework Hercules transport aircraft from 24, 30, 47 and 70 Squadrons and its attached Engineering disengagement from 24/30 and 47/70 Engineering Squadrons RAF Lyneham. Eight F-16 close air back up scrapper of the Royal Netherlands Air Force were deployed to Kandahar Airfield to back up the spread out NATO functioning in southern Afghanistan in late 2006.

The authority of Afghanistan has been slow in reconstructing the installation, the vast bulk of it has been repossessed from yr of leave out and damage by Soviet and Taliban soldiers.

The inside gardens, pools, kitchen galley, public toilet installation, and ticketing area  have been reconstructed. With the passage of the U.S. rider area  depot to the Afghans in 2005, the airport is now used for civilian voyages. It was used for the 2006 Hajj by Muslim pilgrims.

At the same clip, Canada also fielded a battle group for 2 successive six-month rotary motion, and deployed a new rotary motion for the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) at Camp Nathan Smith in Kandahar. Since 2007, the airport is back up by the United Nations under the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) streamer, although a prominent ground for the US and Canadian Forces, many other Armed Forces are found there. British Forces use Kandahar as their briny level station for the South and wing direct into the Helmand district. Fast jet plane and armed combat eggbeaters are also deployed here as this is the independent airport in the upset south east of the commonwealth.

The deployments in February 2006 conveyed Task Force Afghanistan in Kandahar to approximately 2,250 force. The missionary post of TFA was to better the security state of affairs in the southern area , and play a key part in the passage from the U.S.-led multinational alliance to NATO leading.
