Jersey Airport (IATA: JER, ICAO: EGJJ) is turn up in the parish of Saint Peter, 4 NM (7.4 kilometre; 4.6 mi) west northwest of Saint Helier in Jersey, 1 of the British Crown Dependencies in the Channel Islands.

History

Air service to Jersey before 1937 dwell of biplane airliners and some hydroplanes districting on the beach at Saint Aubin's Bay. Jersey Airways and Imperial Airways were amongst those who functioned to the island before the Second World War, but statuses were hard as timetables were ordered by tides. It was also hard to preclude fellow member of the public from walking across the territory area, and anybody aircraft which had mechanical jobs had to be drag up the ways until the tide pulled away.

Arms and date on the original 1937 tower

The States of Jersey make up one's mind to construct an airport which opened on ten March 1937 with 4 grass landing track, the longest of 2,940 foot (896 m) with a concrete centreline. Concrete taxi strip were added during the World War II line of work by the Luftwaffe — they also made depots, 1 of which is still in being. A 4,200 foot (1,280 m) macadamise landing track was opened in 1952 and the grass strips were closed. A characteristic of the airport in the 1950s was the traffic control system — traffic-lights were in location to preclude vehicles using the route from Les Quennevais to the Airport when airplanes were being travel to or from the depot used by B.E.A.

The landing track was continued several clips over the yr, hitting its current length in 1976. Additional taxi strip were added several yr afterwards to better access to the 1 finish of the landing track. However, due to its cut back length, in October 2007 Thomsonfly denoted the remotion of some services as it presents the bigger Boeing 737-800 to its fleet.

There are about 75,000 aircraft motions and 1.6 million riders each year at the airport ground on 2008 statistics.

Terminal

The 1937 depot was planned with a control tower between the arrivals and going area . The depot was continued in 1976. A new depot butting against the being depot was opened in 1997.
