Inyokern Airport (IATA: IYK, ICAO: KIYK, FAA LID: IYK) is a public airport turn up in Inyokern, California, United States, assisting the Indian Wells Valley area of Kern County. It is owned by the Indian Wells Valley Airport District. The airport is largely used for civil aviation, but is assisted by 1 commercial air hose.
History
The Inyokern Airport Dragstrip opened in 1954, and was the 2nd oldest continuously functioning dragstrip in the United States, behind Thornhill Dragstrip in Kenton, KY which opened in 1953. The drag strip closed during the 2005 season due to new Federal Aviation Administration ordinances.
Film history
In the wake of the drag strip's shutting, the airport has been actively boosting its use for movie hits, with the Ridgecrest Regional Film Commission selling it (Runway 28) as "the district's #1 picture show place". A eminent representative of this new use is a video advert entitled "Gravity", for the Lexus IS. The airdrop "mark" characteristic in the commercial, where the falling auto hits the dry land, was painted on the old drag strip; nevertheless, many of the vehicle shooting predating the auto drop really characteristic the Lexus roll down landing track 20. Other eminent automotive telecasting adverts hit here include most topographic points from Saab's "Born from Jets" run, as good as commercials for Volkswagen.
