The airport was originally used by the Royal Air Force during World War II and was opened for polite functioning in 1947. British European Airways, 1 of the predecessors to British Airways, set about voyages to London Heathrow in the mid-1970s using a combination of Hawker Siddeley Trident jet plane and Vickers Viscounts (4-engined turbo-propeller planes). By the late 1970s and early 1980s there were 2 daily voyages between Inverness and Heathrow, nevertheless the path was stopped in 1983 on the dry land of poor fiscal functioning. Dan-Air inherited the service, offering a three-times daily service using ab initio BAC 1-11 jet plane come after in the early 1990s by Boeing 737-200 aircraft. The air hose keep up the path adding relates to London Gatwick and Manchester in the late 1980s, even so these new services turn up not to be successful and were stopped.

When Dan Air was purchased by British Airways in 1992, the flag bearer retained the service for a further 5 yr, adding a 4th daily oftenness shortly before pulling away the link up, amidst considerable contention and public ire, in fall 1997. British Airways reassigned the London service to Gatwick, functioned by its subordinate on a three-times daily ground using lower capacity BAe 146 regional jet plane. The growth of easyJet as a pressure in UK air power also cooccured with the set up of a daily service to London Luton in 1996. Other destinations and air hose were added (Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands, Leeds-Bradford, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle), especially after 2003, where HIALs's selling attempts were attended to by path development monetary fund back up from the Scottish Executive. The London Heathrow link up was re-instated in 2004, by bmi on a daily oftenness, still the service was stopped in March 2008, the air hose adverting arising costs at Heathrow as the ground.

International scheduled services have ne'er turn up successful at Inverness. A new weekly seasonal service between Düsseldorf and Inverness will get down in Summer 2009, functioned by Lufthansa CityLine.

The currently defunct Snowflake (a low cost foot soldier of SAS) functioned a twice weekly service to Stockholm in the summertime of 2004, still the service was move back after a short time period of functioning due to want of claim. KLM UK functioned a daily service to Amsterdam via Edinburgh in 1997 but this was short-lived, lasting only a few calendar month. ScotAirways set up a service to Amsterdam in 2001, even so this was move back coming after the events of 11 September. British Airways experimented with a Saturday only connexion to Bergen in Norway (via Kirkwall and Sumburgh) during the summertime of 1990 but this to a fault was move back and ne'er reinstated. A 4 clips weekly service to Dublin was functioned by Aer Arann between 2006 and 2008 using ATR 42 aircraft before being move back due to the results of intensifying fuel monetary values.

The airport does an eminent operate within the Highlands and Islands web, operating as a hub where voyages between the islands and the central belt tie. In the 1970s, British Airways functioned Viscount services on the web after down-sizing to Hawker Siddley 748s. These were then replaced by ATPs. British Airways elongated to lose money on these paths and bit by bit reassigned its functioning to franchise bearers British Regional Airlines and Loganair. Today these services are all functioned by Loganair under a franchise understanding with Flybe. Another emerging participant is Inverness-based Highland Airways which functions relates to Stornoway and Benbecula as good as supplying postal service to all the islands. Links to the central belt have lately been lost. There are no longer anybody direct services to Glasgow after they were move back by Loganair. Highland Airways' tries to function this service were afterwards short-lived. There is, nevertheless, a twice daily relate to Edinburgh.
