It originally covered 440,000 square meter. Since then, the location has turned more than tenfold to 5.7 foursquare klicks. The independent apron covers 320,000 square meter. The Airport is 8.5 kilometre north west of the center of the City of Hamburg in the Fuhlsbüttel quartern.
The Airport was opened in January 1911, it is the oldest Airport in Germany which is still in functioning. In the 1970s, there were treatments of travel Hamburg airport north to a location near Kaltenkirchen.
