Groningen Airport Eelde (IATA: GRQ, ICAO: EHGG) is a civilian airport near Eelde, a city in the Dutch district of Drenthe and is 4.8 NM (8.9 kilometre; 5.5 mi) southward of Groningen.
Though there is a individual scheduled rider service to Groningen, the airport is largely used for charter voyages to vacation destinations in Greece, Portugal, Spain and Turkey. In 2007, the airport dealt 172,400 riders. The airport is also the homebase of the KLM Flight Academy.
History
The airport was officially opened on May 23, 1931 by city manager Jan Gerard Legro. Legro denoted at the opening that it will turn into 'an airport for the entire North district'. During the opening there was an air exhibit which 40,000 mortals came to see.
On August 15th 1931 a scheduled voyage between Eelde and Schiphol established, but it was no succes. In 1933 the airport's name was modified into 'NV Luchthaven Eelde'.
