Royal Air Force Station Ascension, more usually known as RAF Ascension Island, and sometimes known as Ascension Island Base, is a British armed forces airbase on Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean, near the Equator.

History

In 1939 Ascension got eminent as a HF/DF radio station covering trade route. After the United States moved into World War II, an air strip was made using a US task squeeze.

The 1st aircraft to bring down on Ascension Island was a Fairey Swordfish from HMS Archer in 1942. In 1943 the United States Army Air Force launch Wideawake Airfield, by agreement with the British authority. The field was abandoned at the finish of the conflict, and fell into neglect. The Americans returned in 1956, and reopened the field in 1957. The landing track was continued and continued in the mid 1960s to allow for bigger aircraft. USAF then, and afterward NASA constituted missile landing tracking installations ground at Cat Hill. Although NASA use finished in 1967, USAF elongates its use with several one C force, largely contractors.

RAF Ascension Island was re-garrissoned by the RAF in 1982 and used extensively as a level ground during the Falklands War. Operation Black Buck, the long bush bombing marauds, were carry out from there. The ground elongates this level station part for the Falkland Islands, for both the RAF and the United States Air Force.
