The airport opened in 1974 near the small town of Rębiechowo (on westernmost district integrated into the Gdańsk borough of Matarnia in 1973), to replace the previous airport turn up closer to the town center in the suburban area of Wrzeszcz. The airport get its current name in 2004. In 2006 it assisted 1,249,780 riders (an increase of 84% over the previous yr). Half of this figure were international riders.
