Vágar Airport (Faroese: Vága Floghavn, Danish: Vágar Lufthavn) (IATA: FAE, ICAO: EKVG) is the only airport in the Faroe Islands, a self-governing district of Denmark. Due to the Faroe Islands' instead anomalous position, the airport is not full theme to the patterns of the European Union. It is the briny functioning ground for Faroese national airline Atlantic Airways and, for a short time period, during 2006, the low cost air hose FaroeJet.
History
The airport was made by British Royal Engineers during World War II on the island of Vágar. The location was pick out primarily because it was difficult to see from the skirting waters and anybody possible German war vessel. (See British line of work of the Faroe Islands in World War II).
Today
Since 2002 Vágar has had a turnpike connexion via a burrow to the neighbor island of Streymoy, upon which the Faroese capital Tórshavn is located.
On May 1st, 2007, the airport was handed over to Faroese command by the Danish Civil Aviation Authority. There are proposals to spread out the airport and continue the landing track.
A figure of domestic Faroese destinations is able to be hit from Vágar by the Atlantic Airways eggbeater service. International destinations include Copenhagen, Aalborg and Billund in Denmark, Reykjavík in Iceland, Aberdeen, London and Sumburgh (Shetland) in the United Kingdom, Narsarsuaq in Greenland and Oslo and Stavanger in Norway. At present, due to the short length of the landing track, it has transverse ruts to ameliorate braking activeness. Furthermore, pinch turn-off area , close to each finish of the landing track, with interrupted rocks have been constituted. Damage to aircraft using the area may be anticipated. The short landing track averages that only short takeoff and districting (STOL) aircraft such as the BAe 146 is able to use the airport.
