It covers about 144 acres (58 ha) of district merely northward of the Edmonton town center. The airport is named for the former city manager Kenneth Alexander Blatchford. Before being named Edmonton City Centre Airport (ECCA), it was known as the Edmonton Municipal Airport.
History
The airport has a rich air power history, being the 1st certified field in Canada (1929). Characters such as Wop May assisted open up air power in Alberta and Northern Canada, further solidifying Blatchford Field as the "Gateway to the North". Wiley Post district there during both of his circumnavigations. The airport was also a major stop-over on the Northwest Staging Route during World War II and hosted a wartime British Commonwealth Air Training Plan flying school and an air percipient school. A full history is able to be pulled together at the Alberta Aviation Museum.
A meteorological observation post was constituted in 1937. Over the yr since then, its location has witnessed increasing might by the urban heat energy island result. By the mid-1970s, "Edmonton Municipal A." (as named in the Monthly Record of Meteorological Observations in Canada) was on a regular basis entering some of the longest frost-free time period in the Prairie Provinces with the 1st fall freeze frequently not coming before October.
The ECCA has been sweep up in a fierce argument for several decenniums. In the 1950s, the take for a longer position of landing track to adapt the bigger aircraft on the skyline was clear. With no ability to spread out CYXD, the hunt was on for a new location. After much argument, the current location for the Edmonton International Airport (CYEG) was selected. Upon pass completion of the international airport in 1963, CYXD was to shut. Political resistance to this locomote made the City of Edmonton to hold CYXD open, and moved into Edmonton into a 30+ yr airport argument that has characteristic logistics, transportation system, and regional disparity issues of all time since.
Several types of jet plane rider aircraft did use CYXD, including the Boeing 737-200 and other early 737 variances. These were ab initio functioned by Pacific Western Airlines and its after embodiment Canadian Airlines from their initial buy in the late 1960s up until integration. The landing track lengths are ground on the absolute maximal functioning fashions and weight of this air hose; nevertheless, the extreme have on do by using this field and forcing these boundaries was a touch. Other jet plane service came in the characteristic of the BAe-146 as an Air Canada connexion voyage functioned by Air BC. DC-9s in Air Canada livery functioned briefly out of YXD in the early 1980s but go forth due to field/weight limitations. Time Air and its after trade name of Canadian Regional functioned Fokker F28s and Echo Bay Mines Limited functioned a private 727-100 from the field for several yr. However, the claims for of all time increasing bush and the increased weight and landing track length demands for the next contemporaries aircraft in these series do their use at CYXD economically and in the many examples physically impossible.
In the 1992 municipal election, the City of Edmonton maintained a plebiscite with the inquiry of "Are you in favor of bylaw No. 10,205, The Edmonton Municipal Airport Referendum bylaw?". This bylaw held CYXD open to all traffic that the field is able to lawfully deal; 54% okayed. In the 1995 election, a 2nd plebiscite was set forth to the citizens of Edmonton inquiring if the bylaw should be revoked on the ground of consolidating all scheduled traffic at CYEG and holding CYXD open for 56 yr to general and corporate traffic. 77% of electors okayed this edition, and in June 1996, the integration function was nail down.
Currently, CYXD stays open as per the term of a contract with the City of Edmonton. There are little rider air hose that is able to use the installation. These air hose, nevertheless, is able to transport more than ten riders and are cut back to which destinations they is able to assist - principally destinations northward of the town.
From 2005 on, the airport has each year been changed over into a speedway for the Edmonton Grand Prix Champ Car rush. Due to Champ Car uniting with the Indy Racing League, the IndyCar Series currently steps on it there.

Economic impact
The ECCA applies or so 1,000 individuals and adds $18 million in tax income for the town of Edmonton. It brought forth $4.6 million in direct gross for Edmonton Airports, with disbursements of $3.9 million.
Future programmes
The district that the ECCA sit down on is being rent from the town for a time period of 56 yr, set about in 1995. Despite having a rich 70 yr history, some mortals believe that the corporate, general and army aviation services should be reassigned to the Edmonton International Airport or the Edmonton/Villeneuve Airport so that the district is able to be re-developed for a myriad of other uses, including much-needed enlargement of the NAIT campus, LRT extension to St. Albert and infill housing development. Another vantage of close up this airport is to take tallness limitations on high-rise tower development that many demand has impeded business district development for decenniums.
However, there are others that see the benefits to the town of having a central field for general, medivac and corporate air power, as good as retaining the IndyCar belt along in the town, so the argument elongates. The Alberta Aviation Museum is turn up onsite, which relies on the landing track to bring in planes for its exposes. A via medium advised is to go forth the only ILS landing track open (16/34) while letting the rest of the airport to be reformulated for other uses.
Other exponents wish to reconstruct scheduled air hose service to "the Muni" due to the convenience of its place near business district and the VIA Rail station. However, its landing track is able to no longer deal currently's jet plane. Also, before integration in 1995, this airport was being used by air hose as a feeder to the Calgary International Airport and cutting down traffic at the Edmonton International Airport to the point of near-closure.
Edmonton City Council is slated to do a final determination on airport closing in June, 2009.
