Durham Tees Valley Airport (IATA: MME, ICAO: EGNV) is an airport in North East England, turn up 4.7 NM (8.7 kilometre; 5.4 mi) southeastward of Darlington, approximately 16 kilometre (9.9 mi) southwestward of Middlesbrough and 39 kilometre (24 mi) southward of Durham. The airport assists County Durham and divisions of North Yorkshire, and is location at Middleton St George in the Borough of Darlington.

Durham Tees Valley Airport is 1 of the UK's little airports, but offers link up to several domestic and European destinations. The airport has a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence (figure P518) that lets voyages for the public transport of riders and for winging direction.

Originally an RAF Station, the field got Teesside International Airport in the 1960s, and was renamed Durham Tees Valley Airport in 2004. The bulk stockholder in the airport is Peel Airports Ltd who own 75%, while the resting 25% is owned by a pool of local authority, dwelling of Darlington, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Councils.

History

RAF station

Main article: RAF Middleton St. George

The field set about its life as Royal Air Force Station Goosepool, and in 1941 got RAF Middleton St. George. The RAF station was closed in 1963 and the field was post for sale.

Teesside International

The former RAF Station and field was bought by the late Cleveland County Council who saw the potentiality of the field as a commercial 1, and germinated it into a polite airport. The 1st voyage from the airport took location in 1964 with a Mercury Airlines service to Manchester. Princess Margaretha of Sweden opened the international rider depot in 1966.

After voyages to Manchester the airport elongated to evolve a little yet strong web of both scheduled and inclusive tour charter paths. In November 1969 the 1st voyage to London Heathrow was functioned by British Midland. The path nevertheless stopped functioning on the 28 March 2009, after almost 40 yr.

Durham Tees Valley Airport

The name was modified in say to more better location the airport geographically, as many of the airport's riders, especially those from outside the UK, were unfamiliar with the place of Teesside, whilst Durham is more better known.

In January 2005 a £56 million enlargement and development program was set about which to enable the airport to deal up to 3 million riders each year. Phase 1 of this development program has already been finished and has seen the building of a new slip road, as good as a whole new depot front end and inside. Also the field visible radiation has been replaced.

Future development

In December 2006 Darlington and Stockton Borough Councils okayed programmes for the 1st of 2 enlargements for the airport.

The programs include an continued and renovated depot, with better luggage deal and check-in installations, lounges, business office infinite and retail and eating house installations. Also, a Cargo and Maintenance "small town" is advised alongside with 9 additional aircraft stand up and 4,500 auto parking zone.

A 2nd programming practical application has also been okayed, for an 18,600sq meter business organisation parkland with a 100-bed hotel, gin mill and eating house. Since these programmes were okayed, the airport modified the practical application replacing the advised Cargo and Maintenance "small town" with an Industrial Estate or else.

Building work for both of the above programmes has yet to set about.

Plans for an 80-bedroom Hotel have been okayed, nevertheless Durham Tees Valley Airport opposes these programmes as they were do by an outside corporation.

Ground transport

Bus

The Sky Express bus company was set up in May 2005 and linked the airport with Darlington's Rail Station and Town Hall. Travel was free for bona-fide riders. The service run up to every 60 minute during the solar day and was functioned by Arriva North East. The service stopped functioning on 25 January 2009.

Arriva also functions services twelve and 20, the twelve runs from Hurworth/Neasham and Darlington to the airport, and the 20 runs from Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees to the airport.

Car

The airport is located off the A67 and is within easy make of the A1(M), A19, A66 corridors, it is good signposted from all major paths. A eminent upgrade to complete a fast relate direct to the airport from the A66 was finished in 2008.

Rail

Whilst the airport has its own train station rail link up are poor as this remote station, some distance from the depot construction, is only assisted by 2 railroad train per hebdomad. The airport is now in talks with Network Rail to do the nearby Dinsdale railroad terminal the independent rail connection for the airport in the short term.

Taxi

Taxis are available direct outside the airport depot.
