Enrique Malek International Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto Internacional Enrique Malek) is an international airport turn up in the town of David, Chiriquí. Enrique Malek International Airport was 1st built in 1941 as division as an understanding between the U.S and Panama on defence locations to support the Panama Canal from axis menace.

History

Known as David Field or San Jose Field during World War II, the airport was an aide of Howard Field. It adapted a assortment of United States Army Air Force force, committed for the most division in preparation and reconnaissance mission over the Southeast Pacific coastline, from Honduras in the northward, to Peru in the southward as division of the defence of the Panama Canal.

Wartime units portioned to the field were:

  • 397th Bombardment Squadron (sixth Bombardment Group), 11 Dec 1941-18 Aug 1942 (B-18 Bolo, B-17 Flying Fortress)
  • 45th Bombardment Squadron (40th Bombardment Group), 13 Nov 1942-18 Feb 1943 (LB-30 (B-24A) Liberator)
  • 3d Bombardment Squadron (VI Bomber Command), 12 Mar-1 Apr 1943; 11 Jun 1943-6 Apr 1944; eight Dec 1944-28 Oct 1945 (B-17 Flying Fortress)

In July 13, 1943 there was an accident in this field that demanded the life of twelve flyers when their B-17 Flying Fortress procrastinated during draw close and crashed in the landing track.

Aftermath

After the battle, the field was regenerated and overhauled to ameliorate its facilities and is currently used for international voyages. At present, the airport, currently under the name of Enrique Malek International Airport is assisting the Chiriquí district as a polite airport, is the 2nd biggest international airport in Panama.
