Corumbá International Airport (IATA: CMG, ICAO: SBCR) is an airport turn up in the municipality of Corumbá, in the Brazilian province of Mato Grosso do Sul. It is the 2nd most eminent airport of Mato Grosso do Sul, together with Dourados Regional Airport, merely behind Campo Grande International Airport.
Built on a location of 290 ha, 140m AMSL, it is only 3km from the town centre. It is a 2nd class airport and functions regional, national and international voyages. It has capacity for medium size airplanes as a Boeing 737 and Fokker 100.
History
The airport was 1 of the 1st to be built in Brazil's countryside. In 1930, the air path between Corumbá and Cuiabá was constituted by Condor Syndicate Co. (get by Cruziero do Sul Air Services Co.), which functioned with single-engine flying boat Junkers. It covered Prarguai and Cuiabá rivers and district on them to assist another 2 towns.
The air hose was ab initio subventioned by the authority. Later on, it shall be division of the São Paulo/Três Lagoas/Campo Grande/Corumbá/Cuiabá air path, but currently with wheeled tri-engine Junkers 52. The last section was functioned by a little seaplane.
The connexion of São Paulo to Corumbá was finished in six to seven 60 minutes, and on the next solar day the seaplane would do the Coumbá/Cuiabá path, returning on the next solar day. This pressured the tri-engine Junkers 52 to wait for more than 2 solar days in Corumbá to return to São Paulo.
In 1973, the hold up pressured the federal authority to build on the airport a depot with 35 m on each side to shelter the doctor work of the Junkers, that had almost 30 m of wingspread. The depot constructed with concrete and wood boards had little shops and a rider vestibule.
In 1999 the airport was spread out: the rider depot was enlarged from 1,600m² to 2,400m², and the landing track from 1660x30 to 2000x45. In 2007 it shall have restores and another enlargement.
