Bandaranaike International Airport (also known as Katunayake International Airport) (IATA: CMB, ICAO: VCBI) is Sri Lanka's only international airport. It is turn up in Katunayake, 35 kilometre (22 mi) northward of Colombo. It is administrated by Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd. It is the hub of SriLankan Airlines, the national bearer of Sri Lanka.

History

The airport set out as a Royal Air Force ground during the Second World War, RAF Negombo. In 1957, when Solomon Bandaranaike take all the British Military Bases from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), the ground was handed over to the Royal Ceylon Air Force (RCyAF) and renamed Katunayake. Part of it still stays an Air Force ground.

In 1964 Anil Moonesinghe, the Minister of Communications, set about the construction of a new international airport to replace Ratmalana, with Canadian help. The airport was finished in 1967, and Air Ceylon, the national bearer, got international functioning from it using a Hawker Siddeley Trident and a hired British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) VC-10. The airport was also a Trans World Airlines (TWA) hub for a short clip.

It was named Bandaranayake International Airport (BIA), after Prime Minister Bandaranaike, in 1970. It was renamed Katunayake International Airport in 1977 but was modified dorsum to Bandaranayake International Airport in 1995.

Expansion labors have been attempted at Bandaranayake International Airport. A dock with 8 aero-bridges opened in November 2005, the 1st of its form in Sri Lanka.

On May 7, 2007 the Sri Lankan Government make up one's mind to switch some major army aviation out of the infinite edge the airport to SLAF Hingurakgoda, pavement the fashion to more civilian functioning.

The time to come

Future labors may include a 2nd landing track to back up the Airbus A380, the biggest commercial air hose in the  world, a further 8 rider entrances, a domestic depot, a 5-storey car-park, and a 5 star hotel neighbor the airport. New draw close transmission channels into the airport shall be made.
