The airport was named after its establisher, former town managing director William R. Hopkins, on his 82nd birthday in 1951.

It is the 3rd biggest hub for Continental Airlines and its regional bearers ExpressJet, Chautauqua, and CommutAir, which functions its 2nd biggest hub from the airport. In 2006, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport unveiled a new selling and trade name run. The older parallel landing track, once denominated Runway 6C/24C, is 7,096 x 150 foot. (2163 x 46 m). Its finishes are conspicuously marked with light up 'X' signs to preclude its inadvertent use, as it has currently been decommissioned as an active landing track.
