The Airport is turn up at the point of intersection of Canberra's briny East-West arterial blood vessel (Parkes Way/Pialligo Avenue) and Eastern Ring Road (Monaro Highway/Majura Road) near the semi-rural suburban area of Pialligo approximately 8–10 min. drive from the town center, 15 min. from Gungahlin and ten min. from Queanbeyan at non-peak clips; travel time is able to be much longer at extremum clips due to traffic over-crowding.
The district is now split up into 5 area :

- The balance of the ex-RAAF ground area has been named Fairbairn and is being evolved as another "business organisation parkland" area .
- There is a retail and merged use subdivision on Majura Road which has been named Majura Park.
History
The airport was build up from an old landing strip that was 1st lay down in the 1920s, not long after the National Capital location was make up one's mind. In 1939 it was taken over by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), with an area rent out for general aviation.
On 13 August 1940, in what got known as the Canberra air calamity, a RAAF Lockheed Hudson winging from Melbourne crashed into a little hill to the east of the airport. Four crew and 6 riders, including the Chief of the General Staff and 3 Federal Government ministers of religion, were assassination in the accident. James Fairbairn, Minister for Air and Civil Aviation, was 1 of those assassination and Fairbairn Airbase the eastern element of the airport was later named after him. In 1962 the armed forces side of the Airport was renamed RAAF Base Fairbairn. The North-East quadrant of the Airport still retains the Fairbairn name.
The rent to the location was sold to Canberra International Airport Pty Ltd in 1998, and the RAAF area was sub-leased dorsum to the Department of Defence. It was decommissioned as a RAAF ground in 2003, (although No. 34 Squadron RAAF rests found there), and the RAAF area was renamed Defence Establishment Fairbairn.
In the yr since the sale of the rent to Canberra International Airport Pty Ltd, a series of upgrades have taken location at the Airport including major depot upgrades. In early December 2007, programmes were denoted to build a new depot, but these programmes were location on hold in late 2008.
Over a dozen office constructions have also been built on Airport district at Brindabella Business Park and Fairbairn, and a retail precinct named Majura Park, which also comprises an mercantile establishment center functioned by Brand Depot, has been constituted alongside Majura Road.
The Canberra Spatial Plan let go by the ACT Government in March 2004 placed the airport and border area as being an eminent center for time to come industrial and related to development.
Several new depots and constructions have been put up in both Fairbairn and near the depot. A 600m extension to the airport's landing track and upgrades to landing track systems were finished in 2006.
In 2008, the direction of Canberra International Airport set up an ad campaign in back up of the thought of having Canberra see as Sydney's Second Airport. The motto they were using was "Is the solution to Sydney's 2nd airport still 20 yr forth? Less than three 60 minutes really." Their point of position is presented at "Canberra is the Only Serious Solution to Sydney's Air Traffic Problems."
The Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese rejected Canberra International Airport's outline master programme in November 2008 on the evidences that it did not render enough point on the proposal to evolve the airport into a cargo hub and the airport's community consultation had been deficient. The Airport's 2005 master programme was also picked apart by the then-Howard Government for not providing enough info.

There are 2 shuttle bus run by Deane's Buslines - the Airliner service into Civic (path A1), and itinerary 834 to nearby Queanbeyan on the New South Wales side of the NSW/ACT mete.
Canberra airport depot is not serviced by the ACT public transport system (ACTION). ACTION's internet site still has the airport named as a suburban area, nevertheless the bus path named next to the airport links to the Deane's Buslines internet site. ACTION runs 5 services to various divisions of the airport location (to/from Civic (737), Belconnen (ten), Gungahlin (757), Tuggeranong (786), Weston Creek and Woden (28)), but these halt at Brindabella Business Park, Fairbairn and Brand Depot, not at the depot itself. These places are quite a distance from the independent depot construction, doing them impractical for footers with baggage, and hence use of these services as airport shuttles is highly low.

The ACT Government constituted a round table working party to analyze the routes around the Airport and place solutions to the road over-crowding through the Majura Valley. The round table placed that the make of the road traffic was increased traffic from Gungahlin, the enlargement of the airport and Queanbeyan's turning population. The working party urged a level draw close to working the traffic over-crowding, with Stage one including the gemination of Pialligo Avenue, Morshead Drive and Fairbairn Avenue.
