Manas International Airport (IATA: FRU, ICAO: UAFM) is the independent international airport in Kyrgyzstan turn up 25 kilometre (16 mi) north-northwest of the capital Bishkek.

It is also the location of Manas Air Base, a US Air Force ground back up Operation Enduring Freedom and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

In 2007, 625,500 riders passed through the airport, an increase of 21% over the previous yr. 23,172 metric ton of freight were also functioning in 2007.

History

The airport was build as a replacing for the old Bishkek airport that was turn up to the southward of the town, and named after the Kyrgyz epos hero, Manas, at the suggestion of land's most prominent author and intellect, Chinghiz Aitmatov. The 1st aeroplane district at Manas in October 1974, with Soviet Premier Alexey Kosygin on board. Aeroflot functioned the airport's 1st scheduled voyage to Moscow-Domodedovo on May 4, 1975.

When Kyrgyzstan derived independency from the Soviet Union in 1991, the airport set about a slow but steady worsen as its base stay leave out for about 10 yr and a sizable aircraft boneyard germinated; about 60 abandoned ship aircraft from the Soviet epoch, bushing in size of it from eggbeaters to full-sized airliners, were go forth in mothballs on the airport incline at the Eastern finish of the field.

With the start of Operation Enduring Freedom, the United States and its alliance spouses now sought permission from the Kyrgyz authority to use the airport as a army base for functioning in Afghanistan. Coalition squeezes get in late December 2001 and right away the airport saw unprecedented enlargement of functioning and installations. The derelict aircraft were turned over into a grazing land next to the incline to do appartment for alliance aircraft, and big, semi-permanent depots were build to house alliance attack aircraft. Additionally, a Marsden Matting parkland apron was made alongside the Eastern one-half of the landing track, alongside with a big load hangar and several aircraft care installations. A collapsible shelter town spring up across the street from the rider depot, housing over 2,000 soldieries. The American squeezes baptised the location "Ganci Air Base", after New York Fire Department top dog Peter J. Ganci, Jr., who was assassination in the September 11 terrorist attacks. It was subsequently given the functionary name of Manas Air Base.

In 2004, a new parkland incline was added in front end of the rider depot to do appartment for bigger refueling and transport aircraft such as the KC-135 and C-17.

Around the same clip the Kyrgyz authority do a major enlargement and redevelopment of the rider depot, funded in division by the sizable districting fees paid by alliance squeezes. Several eating house, gift shop, and barber stores sprang-up in the depot supply to the deployed soldieries.

The airport depot underwent redevelopment and redesign in 2007 .
