The now-defunct Berlin Tempelhof Airport (IATA: THF, ICAO: EDDI) (German: Flughafen Berlin-Tempelhof) was 1 of 3 airports in Berlin, Germany, located in the south-central borough of Tempelhof-Schöneberg.
Designated by the ministry of transport on October 8, 1923, Tempelhof got the world's 1st airport with an underground railroad terminal in 1927, currently named Platz der Luftbrücke after the Berlin Airlift. While now and then bring up as the world's oldest still-operating commercial airport, the statute title was challenged by several other airports, and has in anybody example been debate since its closing.
Tempelhof was 1 of Europe's 3 iconic pre-World-War-II airports — the others being London's old Croydon Airport and Paris Le Bourget. One of the airport's most severalise characteristics is its big, canopy-style roof that was able to adapt most coeval airliners during its peak in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s, thereby protecting riders from the components. Tempelhof Airport's briny construction was one time amongst the 20 biggest constructions on world. Tempelhof used to have the world's little duty free store.
Tempelhof Airport closed all functioning on October 30, 2008, despite the attempts of numerous demonstrators to preclude the closing.
Overview
Tempelhof was frequently named the "City Airport". It largely had commuter train voyages to other divisions of Germany and neighbor states, but had in the past had long-haul, wide-bodied airliners, such as the Boeing 747 and the Lockheed C5A "Galaxy".
It had 2 parallel landing track. Runway 9L/27R was 2,094 meters (6,870 foot) long and landing track 9R/27L was 1,840 m (6,037 foot). Both were paved with asphalt. The taxi strip was in the characteristic of an ellipse around these 2 landing track, with a individual depot on the northward side of the airport.
Tempelhof Airport closed all functioning on 30 October 2008. Other possible uses are being talked about, and many individuals are attempting to maintain the airport constructions bear on. A non-binding referendum on the stage of the Land (province of) Berlin was held on April 27, 2008 against the impending closing (see beneath) but neglected due to low outturn.
