Adelaide Airport is the principal airport in the South Australian capital of Adelaide and the 5th busiest airport in Australia, servicing over 6.7 million riders in 2007/08. Located adjacent to West Beach, it is about 6 klicks (3.7 mi) from the city-centre. It has been functioned in private by Adelaide Airport Limited under a long-term rent from the Commonwealth Government since 1998.

First constituted in 1955, a new dual international/domestic depot was opened in 2005 which has had numerous awards, including being named the  world's second-best international airport (5-15 million riders) in 2006. It shall be the 2nd hub for Tiger Airways from early 2009.

History

The 1st Adelaide airport was an airport build in 1921 on 24 hectares (59 acres) of district in Hendon. The little installation allowed for a postal service between Adelaide and Sydney. To run across the real development in air power, Parafield Airport was evolved in 1927. By 1947, the claim on air had outgrown Parafield and the current location of Adelaide Airport was pick out at West Torrens (currently West Beach). Construction set about and voyages set about in 1954.

Passengers boarding from the macadamise in 1967; this elongated for domestic riders until 2006.

An extension to 1 of the big depots at the airport assisted as a rider depot until the Commonwealth Government furnished monetary funds for the building of a impermanent construction. International services got regular from 1982 upon the building of an international depot. A new dual-use $260 million installation replaced both the original 'impermanent' domestic and international depots in 2005.

In October 2006, the new depot was named the Capital City Airport of the Year at the Australian Aviation Industry Awards in Cairns. In March 2007, Adelaide Airport was valued the  world's 2nd most good airport in the 5-15 million riders class at the Airports Council International (ACI) 2006 awards in Dubai.

Plans were denoted for an enlargement of the depot in July 2007, including more aerobridges and destruction of the old International Terminal.

On five August 2008 Tiger Airways Australia support that Adelaide Airport get the air hose's 2nd hub which would establish 2 of Tiger Airways A319s by early 2009.

Terminal construction

The airport was reformulated in 2005 at a cost of $260 million. The renovation was bring off by detergent builder Hansen Yuncken. Before the overhaul, the old airport depot was picked apart for its limited capacity and want of aerobridges.

Proposals were germinated for an upgraded depot of  world standard. The final proposal, let go in 1997, called for a big, united depot in which both domestic and international voyages would use the same depot. A combination of factors, the most eminent of which was the founder of Ansett Australia, then a duopoly domestic bearer with Qantas, and the resultant loss of monetary funds for its part of the building cost, saw the new depot programmes put off until an understanding was hit in 2002.

The new depot was opened on seven October 2005 by the Prime Minister John Howard and South Australian Premier Mike Rann. However, Adelaide Airport Limited denoted shortly afterwards that only international voyages would use the new installation now due to jobs with the fuel pumps and subway tobacco pipes. These jobs related to ab initio to the anti-rusting agent used to the insides of the fuel pumps, then to building dust in the tobacco pipes. Although international and regional (from December 2005) aircraft were refuelled via tank ship, a want of infinite and safety comes to precluded this activeness for domestic jet plane, which or else elongated functioning at the old depot. The re-fueling system was cleared of all dust and the new depot was used for all voyages from 17 February 2006.

The new airport depot is about 850 meters (2,800 foot) stop to stop and is capable of care 27 aircraft, including the Airbus A380, at a time and functioning 3,000 riders per 60 minute. It includes high agreeableness public and air hose lounges, 14 glass-sided aerobridges, 42 common user check-in desks and 34 store front end. Free wireless Internet is also supplied throughout the depot by Internode Systems, a 1st for an Australian airport.

The Qantas A380 do a historic districting at the airport on 27 September 2008, ravishing lookers who had pulled together to catch a glance of the giant aircraft. This was a 25 min pitstop, before the aeroplane flew on to Melbourne. This was 1 of the several sees the air hose do as division of a airplane pilot preparation and proving programme.
