Adak Airport (IATA: ADK, ICAO: PADK, FAA LID: ADK), once Naval Air Station Adak, is a public airport turn up due west of Adak, on Adak Island in Alaska. The airport has 2 landing track. The airport is the furthest due west for the entire United States at 176.64W.
Adak's airport is 1 of the biggest and most sophisticated airports in the Aleutian Islands. Built by the U.S. Navy for Naval air transport, the airport is a world-class installation dwelling of a 7,800-foot (2,400 m) landing track and a 7,600-foot (2,300 m) landing track, fit out with an Instrument Landing System and glideslope which alleviate Instrument Flight Rules landings. Adak now has scheduled jet plane service supplied by Alaska Airlines.
History
The armed forces 1st germinated an air station on Adak during World War II. Adak was most late run by the U.S. Navy as a deployment ground for P-3 Orion marine patrol aircraft, principally to deal antisubmarine war functioning against pigboats and surveillance of naval surface vas of the former Soviet Union. With the fall of the Soviet Union in the late 1990s, NAS Adak's opertional viability as a front-line armed forces installment set about to go down, and in the mid-1990s a determination was do by the federal authority to stop armed forces voyage functioning there under the armed forces's Base Realignment and Closure Program (BRAC). That conclusion made the district at NAS Adak eligible for transport dorsum to The Aleut Corporation. The armed forces will stay on Adak, nevertheless, as division of its environmental supervising and clean programme.
